Talk Back: Virtual Wardrobe

Filed under: Talk Back — Salome Strangelove @ 4:02 pm

Recently, while scrolling through Second Life YouTube videos looking for saints know what, my friend, Grace McDunnough, happened upon this:

Virtual Wardrobe - Second Life Tutorial

My initial reaction to anything that promises to help me get control of my inventory was complete and rapt attention with a high probability of glee. But then, I watched the video. From what I can tell, this device is actually more of a texture browser / photo album with HUD display function and handy categorization tools. That, in itself would be helpful in many instances.

But for the limitations.

Unfortunately due to SL system restrictions (which I’m sure make sense in some far off galaxy), all the photos used for HUDs like this tool need to be FULL PERM. Most designers limit the perms on their display/promotion photos included with their items (again, for reasons that probably make sense in some far-off galaxy). So that means in order for this tool to be effective, you’d have to take the time to document and photograph each item in your inventory that you wanted to include. I’m not sure about anyone else, but I’d sooner be able to win an Oscar than find the time to do this.

Something like this WOULD be highly effective if there was a movement to ask designers to include full-perm display photos with their merchandise. I cannot think of a reason they would object, but I’m interested in hearing what others think. As far as I can tell, an item like the Virtual Wardrobe would help us sort through fashion and belongings effectively and it would serve as the keeper of all those extra reference photos in our inventory - lightening up our inventory numbers.

So - would you use an object like this, or do you already?

Can you think of any negative side effect of trying to motivate designers to please include full-perm display photos with their items?

Lemme know what ya’ll think.

SL Fashion Blogging Catch-22

Filed under: Talk Back — Salome Strangelove @ 9:35 pm

Talkback Question:

When you come to Linden Lifestyles, what do you most want/expect to read about?

A. Lots of different designers showcased, no matter the level of quality and experience in the designs.
B. Only items of the highest quality and style.
C. Mostly high-quality items from established designers with occasional “diamond in the rough” finds.
D. What the writers enjoy, regardless of the “status” of the designers or items.
E. Other (fill in your own answer)

Obviously, this question refers to reviews and not our interviews, roundups, and other features.

If you wish to know the genesis of this question, you can read my ramblings after the cut.

Missing the Bosses: Thoughts on my favourite posts.

Filed under: Editorial, Talk Back — CronoCloud Creeggan @ 3:27 am

Like many Linden Lifestyles readers, I am going through Sabrina and Salome withdrawal. I’m really missing the reviews by The Red Headed Shameless Hussy and The Patootie Haired One. Sniff, we miss you, come back soon.

That’s probably the only image I have with The Bosses and I together, taken at the Irish Blog Awards party in SL.

I had an idea, I was remembering some of my favourite posts and reviews, so why not write about them and then ask readers for their favourite posts.

It’s the little things.

That attractive ensemble, composed of pieces from different designers just “works”. It also seems to help mental clarity, I seem to have less issues with scripting while I am wearing it. The skin that Sabrina is wearing in the post is also the only Gala skin I own, a couple of weeks ago I just wanted to see what Gala looked like on me. Armidi Bombshell is also one of the few hairstyles Sabrina and I have in common, I prefer the darker red shades of it and Sabrina wears the Ginger.

Sister Mary Salome (And Other Perfectly Reasonable Desires)

This review features some very lovely dresses, and one of the best nun costumes in SL (including ruler). Hair wise, I probably share more styles with Salome than Sabrina, and Patootie was one of the first hairstyles I bought in SL. I love this post because “Sister Salome” is just adorable.

Sabrina and Salome have been very influential on my fashion choices, though we don’t actually have much inventory in common because of our taste differences. As Salome said in the above post: “You have to understand, this is what we do. We show up and tell the other why we hate what they’re wearing. It’s the way we register our love.” It’s true! It’s because of Sabrina I switched to less intensely scary/glowy green eyes.

Other favourite posts. Oh that’s another thing, thanks to Sabrina I have problems spelling favourite and jewellery, so I’ve given up and spell them the UK/Ireland/Canada way mostly these days.

Here, Kitty Kitty.: Whereupon Sabrina, acquires a pet dragon and first references using “Pants!” as a pejorative term. The dragon is IMHO one of the best carried pets in SL and who can resist “pants!”.

ETD’s Fatal Mistake: Where Salome acquires her “signature” hairstyle, Patootie. Probably the cutest piggie-bun style ever. Temporarily retired, but available again. Thank you, Elika.

HUDDLES-Up: Salome reviews the HUDDLES AO system. I hadn’t heard of HUDDLES before this review, I must have been out of the loop. Now, I can’t live without it. I heart HUDDLES! I mentally thank Salome every day for doing this post.

Skin Bliss: Tete a Pied The post that led me to my skin crack dealer. I love Linden Lifestyles skin reviews.

Of course, I have many more favorites than these, like the one with the bunny slippers, or the one with ETD Belted, or the one with the huge Papa-san chair, but dear readers, what are your favourite posts?

To Bling or Not To Bling

Filed under: Talk Back — Salome Strangelove @ 12:59 pm

Okay lambchops. Sabrina is having RL issues, and I’m busy as a bee with computer and SL issues to boot (part of this may be the DIRE need to trim my inventory) but I have a question that’s making me nuts.

Everyone, but everyone I know hates bling. And yet sellers swear by it, insisting their bling sells better than their items without bling. So let’s have the brutal truth, readers. Hit me with your best shot.

I have three questions:

1. You find an item you like and it is available in bling or no-bling. Which do you buy:
A. Bling
B. No Bling

2. You find an item you like which has bling on/off script. The default setting you prefer is:
A. Bling is on by default; you have to turn it off intentionally
B. Bling is off my default; you have to turn it on intentionally

3. Assume two items are almost exactly the same except for bling- one has bling and the other does not. One of the items is slightly more expensive than the other. Would you:
A. Pay more for the item with bling?
B. Pay more for the item without bling?
C. Take the lowest price item regardless of bling?

Given how Sabrina and I and many people feel about bling, it’s completely acceptable if you want to make your reply anonymous, but please don’t use the comments to trash anyone’s personal preferences.
