Recently, at a concert I happened to find myself sitting beside Bree Birke. She had some hovering text floating above her which read “see my RL profile.” Being the obedient sort, I checked her profile and took a look. What I saw was this:

Yep. In an effort to raise funds, Bree will be chopping off all that lovely hair. As much as it fills me with a sense of horror to think of losing that fabulous mane, it also makes her absolutely fabulous, so I thought I’d do a little mini-interview and find out about this effort in the lady’s own words.
What inspired you to cut off all that beautiful hair for this cause?
The trigger was a friend and his wife who did it last year. This was a bit over a year after I’d lost my mother to cancer; as well, I’d known quite a few others who had or were touched by one of the various cancers. Finally, I had met, during a walk in the park with my dog who at that time *also* had cancer, a group of women, all breast cancer survivors, who were on various teams competing in local dragonboat races. The dog was the catalyst for my getting to talk with them; these women were amazing; they blew me away with their courage, their hope, their joy in spite of all they had gone through, including the loss of dignity that is often involved with aggressive cancer treatments, and and the sadness for all the friends they had lost. It’s really not much of a gift … hair is kind of a renewable resource for many of us.
How can people donate to your effort?
There are so many choices of ways to help. Within SL, feed those Relay for Life Kiosks; stop and throw in a little more. In RL, support your favourite local group, whether it’s for cancer research or to support cancer survivorsand patients during their battle with this dread disease.
In SL, go Bald for a Day on May 12th so that people notice and you can prod them to do the same. If you’re already bald … wear something … put on some funky hair (how about making it pink?), wear a bandana, a crazy hat … something that will give a bit of a double-take to those who know you and make them ask. Same for those who can’t bear to part with their hair which is okay :-). If that were an easy thing we wouldn’t need to make wigs for cancer patients.
Will your SL avie keep her tresses, or is she going under the virtual shears as well?
She’s going under the virtual shears. She’s not too different from my RL avi. She won’t grow it back overnight either … that’s where this turns into fun.
There will also be a benefit concert on May 12th at Mill Pond to help raise funds. The incredibly talented Grace McDunnough will be performing. Keep on eye on the comments of this entry for any further related events.
Often we blog jewelry as the tag-on accessories to other outfit entries. But sometimes pretty baubles just need an entry all their own.

This is the Amelia set from SecondMirage and while some of their other items have touched my fancy here and there, this one really caught my eye. The white diamonds look better with a dusk sun-setting, while the amethyst looks better at dawn - so that’s why I look like a before and after photo. I know. I know. I promise to learn all that local light crap eventually, but just play along for now, please? Danke.

I really like the setting, although the filigree around the pendant gem is so delicate that it can get a little lost. Still, as formal jewelry goes it is pretty delish and delightfully bling-free. However, the necklace is mod/copy so if you want to drop your horribly shiny bling script in one of the 140+ prims of the necklace, there’s nothing but the disapproval of the universe stopping you. Because SecondMirage only sells no-trans creations, however, you will need to IM the owner for gift-giving purchases.
But I digress. In a completely biased act of adoration I have to confess the thing that endeared me most to it - it fit my fucking neck.

When you look at it by itself, the shape of the necklace from this set looks like a schizophrenic roller coaster. But when I put it on, it fits against my neck like it was made for it. No rotating. No blue arrow blues. It didn’t hover an inch off my throat, it didn’t melt into my shoulders. It just fit like a glove. It was fabulous. I almost needed a cigarette after. I have *never* had that happen before. And I’ve worn a lot of frickin’ necklaces. I’m sure that one day this will happen to all of you - that necklace you’ve been waiting for will come along that fits right off the bat and you’ll know you were right to wait. It will be a special moment for you and the necklace to treasure for the rest of your relationship together.
Okay. I’m stopping. Seriously.
The Amelia earring and necklace set was designed by SecondMirage for use the May 5th Spring Into Life fashion auction. It comes in pink diamond, purple amethyst, and white diamond versions and proceeds from the pink and purple will go to Relay for Life. Yay!

Just a reminder to all you dedicated philanthropists: today is Bandana Day!

Today is the day when we ditch our hair, buy a bandana for $50L, and show our support for the Locks of Love fundraising effort organised through the Hair Fair.
I promise that if you bump into me today, you will see me out and about, rockin’ my bandana until midnight game time. Please pop into the Hair Fair to buy your choice of one (or more!) of dozens of fabulous bandanas created by some of SL’s best designers. You can only get them until the end of today, so get while the getting is good!
All proceeds go to benefit Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides wigs to children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. It’s a great charity, and a great match for the team at this year’s Hair Fair!
Upload your snapshots of you and your friends workin’ your fine bandana style to the Linden Lifestyles Flickr group, and Linden Lifestyles will pick the best photo and make a $2,000L donation to Locks of Love in your name and find a way to put your name in lights and give you a bunch of free, cool stuff .
So get with it, chicas! Rock those bandanas!
