So version 1.10 is here, and while I know that as clothes horses, its the fliexible prims we’re supposed to be most excited about, I have to say that the new Local Lighting is rocking my world.
This is my standard fireplace, to which I added a local lighting feature and a warm light orange colour cast:
The light it casts on my avatar is nothign short of revolutionary for SL:

No 27 prim lamps, no particles, no glow scripts… just light. As far as I’m concerned, whoever wrote this part of the SL core is in fact God. “Let there be light” indeed!

Avatar > Preferences > Graphics Detail > Nearby Local Lighting is the shit. Details on settings can be found in this SL Forums post from Jeska Linden.
Rock. Rock. Rock.

Amazing! I can’t wait to see some of the flexiprim clothes that have been released!

Hehe, version 1.1 was released back in October 2003. Version “one point ten” was released today.

My relief is partially because I remember how slow and broken the old Local Lighting used to be. I literally prayed for a replacement, especially when Local Lighting got way worse in 1.7 and it was like “Ooooh, pretty pictures but what an awful slideshow!”
Anyway, those are nightmares, memories, tales to tell and scare children with. The soon-to-be-distant past.
The light shines ever-so-brightly today. Future generations will not know the pain, but they shall experience the pleasures.
And I’ll let Steve Linden–who laid the smackdown on the lights–know you wrote this.

Personally, I think the new lighting system sucks. Each time I zoom out my av looks like a neon-colored cartoon crayoned in by a pot-smoking animator.

Salome, do you have “Avatar vertex program” on? It has a strange effect on the avie’s skin colour.

lol…Jackal you posted about 1 minute after I found it.
So, I retract my statement. The new lighting system doesn’t suck. The Avatar Vertex Program sucks.

^ Make sure graphics card drivers are newest stable version and turn Avatar Vertex Program back on… and if problems are still persisting, IM or email me (torley@lindenlab.com). I’m helping to track down what’s going on–wouldn’t want fashionable avies lookin’ like neon aliens now! (Well, I do–but for different reasons.)
Ta!
