Proof that I can be quite lame, despite my killer SL (and RL) shoe collection is the fact that I am just utterly charmed by the SL Stargate Project. It’s the sci-fi addict in me.

These gates are incredibly detailed and wonderfully textured. I’ve spotted them all over, but only just recently took the time to play around with them and use them to bounce about (see: network map). With a simple click you get the current list of participating regions; typing a destination from the list gives you the geek-gasmic Event Horizon effect:

Then you just click and teleport (using the SL Map feature) or click, close the map, and walk through to get a nifty teleport effect (you still have to go back and use the Map feature, tho).
Sure, you could just use a traditional teleporter, but the Stargate is just pain cool. For me, this project illustrates the real pure fun of SL. It’s geek poetry.
The basic Stargate is free, although if you pick one up and tip L$500 or more at Stargate Command you get the upgraded version. Personally, I believe you should tip a little anyway because the amount of work that goes into this project is worth the Lindens.

I’d so go as a browncoat… in my own special way, but in the Whedon spirit nevertheless!

Hey, this was a surprise when it popped up in my RSS reader… I never expected the gates to make an appearance here!
I’m so glad you guys like them, I still remember my first week on SL when I found a few non-functional Stargates and set to work figuring out how to make them real. It’s definitely gratifying to see the network map covered with them now.

I think you missed a VERY BIG FEATURE with these gates. You can now do group teleports! After the gate dials and the even horizon forms, everyone who touches the water (event horizon) will be teleported to the same destination. How cool is that!

i’m in SL for 2 days now and i have to say
goto munkie island (writen like that) there are 3 gates there + 1 ring teleporter
that’s like the coolest thing
type gate command
normal /dial region
atlantis /d region
upgrade dd:region
also if u find a gate that works with dd:
type in dd:cheju if ur there and u have a bit of luck there stands an x303, it’s the prometheus…it would be more fun if it was the deadalus

I have a free stargate and I am building a replica of the SGC on one of my plots of land
I would like to register my gate on the network since I don’t have a DHD
I cant remember the region but it is on the east side or Oryol, big grey concrete building , Just go inside to use the gate

Anyone think of starting a series of gates as in the CJ Cherryh “Morgaine” series?
And yes, I did name my underwater gate “Well of Shiuan”
