Mystery of the Disappearing Blue Arrow

Filed under: Editorial — Salome Strangelove @ 12:15 am

Okay Nancy Drew detectives, thinking caps on (although I suppose if I really want results I should be calling on Veronica Mars these days).

I have been noticing for a while now that my blue arrow seems to disappear at random while I’m in edit mode. For some items it’s there, and for others it’s not. This only appears to happen for items I am wearing which makes fittings a particular variety of bitch.

Is this just me, or are others experiencing it too?

The following photos were all taken during the same session:

Above we see my happy blue arrow, ready to help me adjust my shoe (which didn’t need adjusting).

When I change to my glasses, however, the blue arrow is missing. And - yes, I’m aware that sometimes the arrows disappear when you look straight at them, but I don’t even have a blue axis on this one. I zoomed around in camera mode looking for the little bugger from all possible angles. It wasn’t there.

This is from my hair (and where the problem started as my shoes and glasses were perfect). I have a blue axis line, but not a blue arrow.

Relogging once brought back the blue arrow for the glasses, but not the hair. Relogging twice made everything fine. So it’s likely not an emergency issue, just a pain to relog when it goes on walkabout. But I haven’t had this happen with the red or green arrows.

Is this bug on anyone else’s radar?

  1. This has been happening to me for weeks and I’ve reported it twice, with accompanying screenshots. At least now I know I’m not the only one…

  6. Shh.. Don’t say anything or bug report it…or we’ll also lose the green arrow after Wednesdays update and be left with just one!

Next month the last arrow will be gone, then camera rotations, ultimately transitioning us from an editable 3D environment to a fixed TWO-dimensional environment!

I wonder what they’ll call the new interconnected webbing of flat surfaces used worldwide?

    ;-)

  10. Happens to me too, not exactly too often, but enough to annoy me. Usually, I can find the blue arrow again by either leaving edit mode and go into it again, or by changing camera angles, but there’s been times when that doesn’t help and relogging is a pain!

  11. Yes, and I hate it. Yes, you can adjust your camera angle, but if you wanted your camera at that angle where it would appear……you wouldn’t have this problem. It’s generally on close ups…and of course, in Jewelry, that’s a pain to not have.

  12. Yes, it happens to me too. Sometimes clicking where the blue arrow *should* be allows me to adjust the object… but it’s kinda tricky to find.

  13. I apologize I just found out about this today; I had this problem recently so I did a search. I’m actively tracking the issue, so it’s on my personal radar.

Does anyone have a solid repro for this? If you do, it’s a lot more likely to be fixed. Please email me with the details at torley at lindenlab dot com if you do, and you can feel free to go ahead and enter it in our Public Issue Tracker:

That way we have a formal record out in the open. Thanks.

  14. Had to comment on the Veronica Mars reference, no matter how old this post may be. Veronica Mars is awesome :)

  15. I reckon we may solve this mystery yet: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1774

  16. There is a sort-of workaround to this, if you rotate your posing stand facing it north the blue arrow comes back. Also zooming out will make it come back but when you zoom back in it’s gone again, so thats not a practical solution, but in the meantime try rotating your posing stand.
