I have a formal event coming up in a few weeks, so I’ve been on the lookout for evening wear that will make me happy. And I’ve found two gowns that - glory, glory hallelujah - don’t look like every other gown in SL, at a store called Ambergris from designer Ambergris Baphomet.
She makes all kinds of clothes from casuals to club wear, but its the formal wear that really stands out for me, and this gothic-inspired Umber gown is among my favourites:

I love how convincingly the crushed raw silk works, and the way the ripped, frayed bustline mirrors the scalloped hem detailing on the prim skirt. This dress, like all the Ambergris dresses I’ve seen, is also very, very well made with excellent seam matching and transparencies. I just think it’s 27 kinds of stunning.
I’ll be the first to admit that I may be the only woman in SL who loves the Watercolor gown - Salome certainly hates it - but love it, I do. And it certainly does not look like every other gown in SL:

One of the reasons I love it is that it is cut from a large, low-repeat pattern. I used to have shoes like this in real life from a shoe boutique in London; the fabric for each shoe was cut from a huge block of hand screened fabric with one huge print, so no two shoes were exactly the same. In fact, you picked out your left shoe and your right shoe independently, and it was enormous fun. Plus they were fabulous shoes and women used to stop me on the street to ask me about them.
Anyway, the pattern on this dress is in fact watercoloured hearts (despite Salome asking “are those water balloons?”) but its not specifically a Valentine’s release and I would wear it all year round. Hell, I’ve been wearing it every day for a week.
One other thing I really like about Ambergris - with every dress you buy, there’s a notecard with a list of suggested shoes to match the outfit, with photos and landmarks. This is extraordinarily clever, and I would like some more of that, please!
