Slip Me Some Skin, Girlfriend

Filed under: Talk Back — Salome Strangelove @ 1:13 pm

I have been thinking a lot lately about the perfect skin. Designers ask me all the time what I think the average femme SL consumer wants from her skin - which elements to focus on, etc. I know what I like, but I really don’t have much inkling about how important it is to the SL population at large, although I do appreciate that designers would like to focus their energy where consumers have the most interest. I considered doing a surveymonkey, but a) we’re limited on the number of responses on surveys; and b) I really like to read your thoughts, suggestions, and input on matters such as these.

So, ladies, it’s grid-down day and now’s your chance. We have a lot of established and new designers who read this blog - tell them what you want from your next skin purchase. (Sorry, fellas, you kinda get left out of most of this one - unless you’re one of the 80% of men on SL pretending to be a woman. In which case, go for it.)

    My thoughts:

When shopping for a skin, I search for a good combination of bits and makeup. I have to be at least 95% happy with both before I can say I really like a skin. As a redhead, I am also in love with freckles. But the bits, the freckles, the makeup, the feet, the hands - all of these things hold equal importance for me. I want it all. I rarely sacrifice one option in favor of another.

I currently use skins from Empyrean Emporium and am happy with them. [In freaking love with them is more like it!] The price tag held me off for some time, but I now own almost all freckled skins in the medium range and have branched out to three other shades. The combination of good bits and good makeup has me convinced. The feet and hands are also quite nice, so I really am happy.

I do have skins where the makeup or skin tone was just so spectacular that I couldn’t resist, though, even without any bits at all! Nylon Pinkney, for example, has delicious skins that I wear quite often - but I only own a few of them, I wouldn’t buy them in bulk. Now … if there were detailed kitty options, I would be willing to buy more!

I would love to see more options provide with skins. Each “makeup” option would ideally come with a choice of freckles/no freckles, multiple options for the kitty, multiple brow options, and optional textured-on elements. Even if I have to buy each option separately, I would be happier to have the option than I would be to have no option at all.

I try on almost every new skin that comes out. I like lots of them, but pick the one that best suits my avi. Most of the time I wear an older Naughty Design skin called Chase. It has the cutest chin dimple ever and looks great on my avi. So far I haven’t found any I like better, but have purchased a few of the Naughty Design Haley Skins as well. Face is most important to me as thats what everyone sees. Body comes second but is important as well.

  16. Yikes, huge subject!!! To be honest though, my skin is the only one I wear and intend to wear…the skin is my character. I can’t change her- I’ve tried and it really didn’t feel right. I’m very happy with the skin I’ve got and I recall I paid a few thousand Lindens for it ( the most I’d ever spent in SL up until that point) and I really can’t complain much. She looks just right-although if I had to change one thing, it would be her eyelashes as they bug me in close up shots! ( Too blurry) Her bits are nice and neat and fit the shape well too..(like some other newbies I got really confused between shapes and skins in the beginning.)She has a great figure if you ask me, but then again I’m biased. My tip is to concentrate on shading-make it as natural as possible, take into account the contours of the body and not just the obvious areas. If I ever intended to buy another skin then the price wouldn’t bother me one bit, it would be the realistic touches. As an SL consumer I want something that will make me, and other people stop dead in their tracks with awe:)

  22. OK. This time I wrote down my answers before scrolling to the comment box:

My Every Day Default Ida Skins are from Natural Skin: the shading is subtle, the ears are nice (I hate it when the ears are darker than the rest of the skin, it’s all I can look at), the makeup is understated and freckles very natural (as opposed to being drawn on with eyeliner). I’ve got other skins from other lines (sin skins, lovey darling, etc) for more my more glamorous moments and hoards of “novelty” skins that I collect like baseball cards. I don’t know why. Maybe for a rainy day. As a rule I favor skins that are not overtly photorealistic and skins without harsh shading (particularly on the collar bones and cleavage). In my eye, they better suit the world.

Incidentally, my favorite demo skins of All Time are some older ones from Nylon Pinkney (or maybe Toast Bard I can’t check right now) that have a mustache drawn on. I find them hysterical and will save them for ever.

One final thought. I believe when you buy a skin, that should be a “base” price and makeup options should be at the most a quarter of the cost of the skin. Why should I have to spend another thousand dollars on a skin just for different makeup? Makeup shouldn’t cost that much.

I’d also like to add, that another VERY important factor are the seams around the kitty/inner thighs. I have spent up to 4000 on skins that are absoloutly awful in that area when the legs are parted, whilst some far cheaper ones are much much better. I am not a raging SL nympho, but as and when I do indulge I prefer not to see a huge black gaping V shaped hole where the seams are, skin makers please take note, this is one of the most irritating things about skins and would deffo be a make or break factor for me when buying a new skin.

  26. I. Price / What You Get
    1. Price Importance For me, price is: c. Not an issue if I like the skin - if I like it I will buy it.
    2. Prim Extras I prefer: b. To buy extras separately from a skin purchase - I may like all that comes with the package and do like to pick and choice myself. But I do like that option to choice from.
    3. Selection / Range Generally, I wear: b. Only one or two skins - I don’t have use for a broad selection – One for me my blue skin that I will try to fit on other AV’s (harpy, medusa, so on) I like being different from everyone else and will pay more in skins to be so.
    4. Price I expect to pay: c. Between L$500 - L1000 per skin – You want me to pay more you better be putting some dang good extra’s in the deal.
    5. Variety Pricing I expect to pay: b. A larger base price for a skin, but then pay less for variations - being I like skins that are not the norm I know I will be playing more bang for my buck to start out with. Heck I’m still using the skin I bought the first week I started SL and haven’t found anything that beats it yet (Nomine’s Moody Blue)
    6. Purchase Habits I buy c. A few variations of a skin I like – Now this I would love to do for the skin I have. I would love to be able to keep the shade of it but have different eye shadow or lip color to it.

    2. Brows – Color I prefer skins with: d. Tintable brows – Now that would be great!
    3. Brows – Style I prefer skins with: b. Natural, but sculpted brows

    III. The Body & Bits
    1. Body / Bits Importance
For me, the body / bits of a skin are: c. Not as important as other factors — I have my own mod to my AV’s shape and like to keep that so I do want something that can be modded.
    2. Tone My ideal skin comes in the following tone/styles: h. Tintable so I can pick my own tone - - not sure what an Drow would fall under there
    3. Shape b. I really don’t care if a designer includes an “ideal shape” - I’m not changing my shape for a skin

And I agree fully with the person’s post before me about the kitty/inner thighs. I hate to wear shirt that are so short they show off that area.

  28. Wow, this took long enough to write…does someone have enough time to read all of these too!

Generally, I agree with Kitty O’Toole. The skin is me and I don’t change them - apart from the makeups obviously - becase she no longer looks like me when I do that. It took me ages to find the one that looked ‘right’ and real, and as near to me as I might have looked years ago.

I love to have makeup and skin tone variations and I also want to have nice collarbones, bum, etc. In addition to fabulous makeup.

My general comment is that I love to update my look, but want basic consistency — to still recognize me, so to speak. I will be most loyal to a designer who offers lots of variety, with the ability to purchase just one or bundles. Of course, these suggestions might not be very practical from a designer’s point of view :-)

I love to play with makeup and prefer lots of options. I would be most loyal to a designer who regularly offers new make-up styles for super cheap to repeat customers — like an upgrade.

Same with shapes. I like to keep one shape, but would like to see multiple shape options if the shape is not modifiable. Make available the regular and dress form for those non-mods; if I were designing I would, for example, create pregnancy shapes for various stages that match my shapes. Of course, I’m not trying to make a living through SL, so that’s easy for me to say :-)

    - no “oily skin” highlights
    - I hate it when the shading is orange (which happens a lot on the paler skins I favour)
    - the ears, feet and fingers have to be pretty
    - nostrils
    - I’ll tweak my shape to get the best out of the skin, but some of them just won’t work with me still looking like “me”. I won’t buy these ones, even if I like them overall.

  46. 1. Price Importance
    For me, price is:

    b. An average consideration in a skin purchase

    2. Prim Extras
    I prefer:

    b. To buy extras separately from a skin purchase

    3. Selection / Range
    Generally, I wear:
    a. Many varieties of the skins I like and prefer lots of different options and selections

    4. Price
    I expect to pay:

    c. Between L$500 - L1000 per skin
    d. Between L$1000 - L$1500 per skin

    Both c + d

    5. Variety Pricing
    I expect to pay:
    a. About the same price for each variation of the skin I buy

    That’s what I expect, but…

    b. A larger base price for a skin, but then pay less for variations

I like this. I LOVED the Tete a Pied Une makeup box, though the discount was too high. I wished there was a makeup box for TaP deux. :-)

    6. Purchase Habits
    I buy
    a. Every single variation of a skin I like - I have to have them all

    b. The majority of the variations of a skin I like

    e. One or few variations of the skin I prefer, but I’d buy more if price were less of an issue

I want them ALL but don’t have the L$ for them all. (I have to go custom because of the red brow thing)

    7. Loyalty
    Which best describes you:
    a. I am very loyal to a skin line

At least 95% of the time I’m weaing a skin from one line. Tete a Pied, though I do have skins from other lines. As I’ve said many times, I’m Roslin’s and CJ’s *****.

    II. The Face & Cosmetics

    1. Face / Cosmetics Importance
For me, the face / cosmetics of a skin are:
    a. The most important part of a skin purchase

    I’m all about the face.

    2. Brows - Color
    I prefer skins with:
    b. Brunette or auburn brows

    e. No preference / other

Red brows! A good auburn is close enough though, since I wear reds, red-browns and brown shades of hair.

    3. Brows - Style
    I prefer skins with:

    b. Natural, but sculpted brows

I like an nicely shaped brow. It should be classic and elegant looking. I wear a specific hair base to get the brow shape I want, thanks Roslin. :-)

    4. Cosmetic Style
    I prefer skins with:
    e. I like it all

I like it all but I don’ thave any goth/vamp skins, but it’s not like I wouldn’t buy one.

    5. Cosmetic Colors
    I prefer skins with cosmetics:
    e. I like it all

I like makeup in RL too.

    6. Cosmetic Elements
I like skin cosmetics that include:
    a. Heavy eyeliner / mascara
    b. Subtle eyeliner / mascara
    c. No eyeliner / mascara
    bb. Subtle or no lip-liner
    aaa. Glossy lips
    bbb. Flat lips
    aaaa. Heavy blush/rouge
    bbbb. Subtle blush/rouge

I don’t like dark lip liner with lips lighter than the liner, not in SL or RL. But mostly I like having different looks.

    7. Nails
I prefer skins to come with:
    a. A basic, neutral nail shade no matter the other cosmetics

    III. The Body & Bits

    1. Body / Bits Importance
For me, the body / bits of a skin are:

    b. An average consideration in a skin purchase

    2. Tone
My ideal skin comes in the following tone/styles:
    a. Pale

    Pale is the new tan!

    3. Shape
    a. I like it when a skin designer includes an “ideal shape” so I know what settings the features look best on
    b. I really don’t care if a designer includes an “ideal shape” - I’m not changing my shape for a skin

a+b, it’s nice when a skin designer mentions/offers compatible shapes, but I like my shape and if s skin doesn’t look good on it, I probably won’t buy it.

    4. Definition
    My ideal skin:

    b. Has subtle shading but not a lot of detail definition

    I like a subtle skin.

    5. Photo Reality
I prefer my skins to look:

A touch of photosourcing is fine, but I prefer hand drawn, but somewhat realistic. I don’t do the Nylon/Toast style skins.

    6. Textured-On Elements
Which of the below describes your feelings:

    b. I would never buy a skin with textured-on elements

A beauty mark is fine, but that’s it.

    7. The Breasts - Detail/Shape/Shading
The detail/shape/shading of the breasts on a skin are:
    a. Make or break on a skin purchase
    b. Important, but not vital

sort of a+b. Boobeh shading is very important, because I’m a shameless hussy when it comes to cleavage.

    8. The Breasts - Areolas / Nips
    I prefer skins with:
cc. Areolas shaded appropriate to skin tone

xyz. I could really care less about the areolas / nipples

I’m not that picky about them but they should look appropriate for the skin.

    9. The Bum - Detail/Shape/Shading
The detail/shape/shading of the bum on a skin is:

    c. Not very important

A nice bum is nice, but it’s not something I focus on.

    10. The Kitty - Detail/Shape/Shading
The detail/shape/shading of the kitty on a skin is:

    c. Not very important

Since every once in a while I’m nekkid, the kitty should “fit” with the style of the skin. But it’s not something I focus on. That’s Sabrina’s job. :-)

    11. The Kitty - Style
    I prefer a skin with:

    d. A trimmed patch or strip kitty

    f. I could really care less about the kitty

I’m not that into checking out the kitty’s but the TaP2 kitty is pleasant looking.

    12. Feet
My general feelings on feet regarding the skins I buy are:
    b. I know feet are challenging, but I appreciate the effort a designer puts into them

  52. Survey Monkey is great when we need to gather statistical information and get one definitive answer, as outputting stats based on responses is really what it excels at.
Offline day Talkbacks are much more informal, and unlike the few polls we do, keeping it this way lets everyone read and discuss everyone else’s answers, which we can’t do at Survey Monkey.

  67. To the ladies with the kitty seams - you shouldn’t have seams anywhere on your skins. I’d hope if someone found seams on mine they’d alert me so I could fix the issue. I’ll spend 4 days getting a hairline seam out of a new skin before it goes on sale, I’m not infallible but I do believe that a seam on a skin is a flaw the designer should be willing to fix.

  68. Questions answered below, but the thing about me is that I wear ONE skin, I do NOT mess around with my shape to suit it, and I want the skin to look just like skin. No makeup or tan-look or anything. IRL I am not the type to wear makeup, and I don’t want my avatar to project a girly-girl image either, so skins that only come with makeup already drawn on make me irrationally angry. :)

Also, my avatar’s shape is not skinny. In fact, many people I meet on SL probably wonder why I would walk around in such a plump avatar. (Answer: I think she’s beautiful. If you don’t, oh well!) I appreciate skins that look OK on larger bodies, even if they are really meant for the 99.5% of SL women who shrink their avatars down to unrealistic proportions.

It took me a really long time to find a skin I like. I found it here at LL, of course! Pixel Deep! Thanks, ladies. http://lindenlifestyles.com/?p=297

My avatar’s skin and shape, and to some extent even hair and eyes, are not things I mess around with. My avatar looks how it looks. That’s virtual me. I love my Pixel Deep skin, and I can’t actually imagine a better skin for me.

  70. I. Price / What You Get
    1. For me, price is c. but I buy few and carefully

    2. I prefer: a

    3. Generally, I wear: b. 2 or 3 (budget) but I am always looking and willing to switch out if I find one I really like

    4. I expect to pay: - around L$1000 for a quality skin

    5. I expect to pay: a. I would prefer to pay: b

    6. I buy: e. - usually only like 2 variations

    7. Which best describes you: b

    II. The Face & Cosmetics
    1. For me, the face / cosmetics of a skin are: a. - other aspects are important also. I won’t buy a terrific overall skin, if I don’t like the face/cosmetics

    2. I prefer skins with: b.

    3. I prefer skins with:: b

    4. I prefer skins with:: - Both b for evening and a for casual wear

    5. I prefer skins with cosmetics: e

    6. I like skin cosmetics that include: - a, bb, aaa, aaaa, bbbb - I like a balance, if the eyes are highly made-up, I prefer lips and blush that goes right along with it. If the cheeks and lips are pale, I don’t want heavily made-up eyes.

    7. I prefer skins to come with: d.– perhaps a little lighter

    III. The Body & Bits
    1. For me, the body / bits of a skin are: b.– important but not as important as how well the overall skin is shaded and cosmetics

    2. My ideal skin comes in the following tone/styles:
    a. - pale, fair, light tan
h.– but not one that goes toward orange

    3. Shape: b. – but I would have appreciated when I started out.

    4. My ideal skin: a.– but the body and the face need to match. If the body is fairly realistic and the face doesn’t live up to that, I am not interested

    5. I prefer my skins to look: d.

    6. Which of the below describes your feelings: b. – not never, but it would be for a theme party. In the lighting my AV was in last night she appeared to have reversed tan lines as though she covered her upper chest and tanned her breasts! It’s a L$1000 skin. Hopefully I was seeing things J

    7. The detail/shape/shading of the breasts on a skin are: b.

    8. I prefer skins with: c, cc, aaa – I don’t look for bumpy as I do for nicely detailed in what ever way the artist draws them.

    9. The detail/shape/shading of the bum on a skin is: b. - I won’t buy either a flat skin or an overly highlighted skins. Please blend the highlights and hairlines really, really well.

    10. The detail/shape/shading of the kitty on a skin is: b. - I would say c, but I have a skin I like with a vertical strip kitty, which looks silly to me and it really bugs me. Can they be mod in shape? Or come with 3 choices – bare, strip, natural?

    11. I prefer a skin with: e

    12. My general feelings on feet regarding the skins I buy are: b. – they are hard, but please make the ends of the toes come to the tip of the feet. ‘tis the season for sandals.

Wrap-up: I am a detail-oriented artist. After I have looked at every aspect on zoom, it has to meet a 5 paces rule with an additional zoom to the face. I will buy a skin that isn’t quite right for me in some areas if it is a well-balanced package with the overall look I desire. If I ever find the ideal skin, I will buy it in every variation for that skin tone.

    Thanks for the opportunity

  71. III. 10. above - “3 choices - bare, strip, natural?”.

I wasn’t trying to put oodles of extra work on the designers. What I was thinking was can a skin come bare, with “extras” - strip and natural patches that can be added in the same way “extra” eyelashes can be presented and then just saved in appearance mode?

  72. I just wanted to add: so many people mentioned Pixel Deep in these comments that I went in search of her skins. I remember looking wistfully at Joannah Cramer’s posters when I fist started shopping a year ago but at the time I think there weren’t demos (or I was too new to notice the demos or some such). Anyway, I’ve got Luster now in Birch with Freckles and I am in love. The “build your own skin” approach is a great way to handle multiple looks. The only thing I didn’t like about the purchase experience was that the boxes are set to “pay” and not “buy” so you can’t see what all you are getting for your L$ (which is LOTS, but I still like to see it in the box becuase I am funny that way). And my one request is: more makeups with freckles please.

PS I had only to tweak my eyebrows to continue to look like myself.

  73. I’m a Luster in Birch fan myself :) And I like that you can buy the skin and then swap out the faces. My only issue with the PD sales method is that it makes your skin inventory VAST which I can find a little overwheleming when I just want to, you know, get dressed. For that reason I tend to stick to the full body base ones, but I’m a slow adapter.

  75. Just wanted to add a comment for any designers working on Goth/Vamp skins - please step away from The Crow video before you start on the make-up!

We really really don’t need yet another crayon-faced, splat eyed goth skin.

Pretty make-up in darker colours - yes
Ultra-pale and pasty white skin tones - yes
Well defined pink naughty bits - yes
Crayon face - no no no!

For goth/vamp comsumers, I recenty found a small range of beautiful skins at Tete à Pied. They even have a “Sandman” Death skin, and she is cute as hell.

  77. I. Price / What You Get

    1. Price Importance
a/b. ONE of the most important, but see #5.

    2. Prim Extras
    a. I like extras, but not too concerned about them. If you have one set of prim lashes, etc., can wear with any skin…

    3. Selection/Range
    a. I like a fair amount of variety among skin lines

    4. I expect to pay:
    d. Between L$1000 - L$1500 per skin, but see #5.

    5. Variety Pricing
    b. I expect to pay a larger base price for a skin, but then pay less for variations. I don’t see this in SL, but it irks me to pay 1000+ for only a slight change in makeup. Multi-skin purchase discounts help, but rarely include all the ones *I* like, i.e., ‘I want 2 from this row and 3 from that row.’ Nope. Have to buy the whole row up/down or across. That stinks.

    6. Purchase Habits
    c. I buy a few variations of a skin I like. I’d buy more if it weren’t for #5

    7. Loyalty
    b. I have my preferences and wear a few different skin lines, but not especially loyal to any of them, per se. Whatever I like *today.*

    II. The Face & Cosmetics

    1. Face / Cosmetics Importance
    a. For me, the face / cosmetics of a skin are probably THE most important part of a skin purchase, but see #III 1, 7, 8, & 10.

    2. Brows - Color
b/d. Brunette or auburn brows AND/OR Tintable brows.

    3. Brows - Style
    b. I prefer skins with natural, but sculpted brows

    4. Cosmetic Style
    I prefer skins with:
a/b. Natural or neutral cosmetics AND glamor or high fashion cosmetics.

    5. Cosmetic Colors
    e. I like all color combinations.

    6. Cosmetic Elements
a/b. Heavy eyeliner / mascara AND/OR subtle eyeliner / mascara,
    bb. Subtle or no lip-liner,
aaa/bbb. Glossy lips AND flat lips, depending on color, occasion, etc.,
    bbbb. Subtle or NO rouge/blush.

    7. Nails
    a. A basic, neutral nail shade no matter the other cosmetics
    OR better yet,
    d. The nail shade to match the lipstick and other cosmetics, but ONLY if WELL-DONE!! Most aren’t.

    III. The Body & Bits

    1. Body / Bits Importance
    a. & b., For me, the body / bits of a skin are about as important as the makeup. I will not buy a skin with awful bits, no matter how nice the face. Ditto for the reverse.

    2. Tone
a/b. My ideal skin comes in pale to Medium tan–in-between,
    OR
    h. Tintable so I can pick my own tone.

    3. Shape
    b. I really don’t care if a designer includes an “ideal shape” - I’m not changing my shape for a skin.

    4. Definition
    My ideal skin:
    a. Has a lot of detail and definition
    b. Has subtle shading but not a lot of detail definition
    (really sort of in-between…).

    5. Photo Reality
    d. I prefer my skins to look like a combination of anime and photo reality.

    6. Textured-On Elements
    c. As long as I can easily cover the textured-on elements, I don’t mind SOME of them… kind of depends…

    7. The Breasts - Detail/Shape/Shading
    a. The detail/shape/shading of the breasts on a skin are make or break on a skin purchase. Period.

    8. The Breasts - Areolas / Nips
    I prefer skins with:
    a/b. Large to medium areolas
cc. Areolas shaded appropriate to skin tone–but darker than most designers go…
    aaa. Textured / bumpy areolas
aaaa. Hard / pert nipples–sort of.

    9. The Bum - Detail/Shape/Shading
    b. The detail/shape/shading of the bum on a skin is important, but not vital.

    10. The Kitty - Detail/Shape/Shading
    a. The detail/shape/shading of the kitty on a skin is make or break on a skin purchase. I don’t care if no one sees it but me. I won’t buy a skin with an ugly kitty.

    11. The Kitty - Style
    e. I prefer a skin with a natural / fuzzy “kitty,” but NOT too much!!! Maybe a naturally trimmed, fuzzy patch of a kitty? :-) The ones on the vogue line are OK to me. Realistic, but not total bushes. (Although, you gotta go Brazillian/bare with the Copacabana thong…et al. Probably need a bare skin along with a natural one.)

    12. Feet
My general feelings on feet regarding the skins I buy are:
    a. Feet are always screwed up - I settle for whatever I get
    b. I know feet are challenging, but I appreciate the effort a designer puts into them
    c. Skins have feet?
All of the above seem correct to me.
